Zero-Click Search

Zero-click search: more people see you, fewer people click.

Impressions are rising and clicks are falling across the web. It is not your site. It is a structural change in how search works, and the 2026 data makes the size of it clear. Here is what changed, what it means, and what to do about it.

The shift

Search is not shrinking. The open web's share of it is.

Search volume keeps growing. Traditional search, AI tools, and commerce search have all expanded. What changed is where the search ends. A growing share of queries are answered on the results page itself, by an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a map pack listing, or a knowledge panel, and the searcher never leaves.

The result is a pattern thousands of site owners now recognise. Rankings hold. Impressions climb. Clicks flatten or fall. Nothing in the analytics explains it, because the cause is not on the site at all. The pie is getting bigger while the slice that reaches your website gets smaller.

That does not make search less valuable. It changes what winning looks like. Visibility that never produces a session still produces recognition, calls, and demand. The businesses adapting fastest are the ones that stopped treating a click as the only proof that search worked.

The direction has been consistent for ten years. The last two years were the steepest move on record.

Search everywhere

Search is a behavior, not a website.

Measured across 41 major destinations, roughly one in five searches now happens somewhere other than a traditional search engine.

Google is smaller than reported

About 74% of desktop searches across the 41 destinations measured, not the 90%+ usually quoted

Amazon, Bing, and YouTube

Each still receives more desktop search activity than ChatGPT

AI is mostly inside Google

AI Overviews on 20%+ of searches dwarf every standalone assistant combined

The long tail is growing

Sites outside the top seven grew their share of search through 2025

What it means

What winning looks like now.

The work did not become pointless. The scoreboard changed.

Still true

Rankings decide who gets quoted

  • AI Overviews draw from what ranks
  • Snippets are pulled from ranked pages
  • The map pack rewards local authority
  • Losing rankings still costs you everything
Changed

The click became optional

  • Visibility can pay without a session
  • Brand recall now precedes the visit
  • Calls and directions replace pageviews
  • Traffic alone understates the return
Required

Measure what survives

  • Impressions and position by cluster
  • Citation share in AI answers
  • Map pack calls and direction requests
  • Branded search demand over time

We report both sides: the visibility you earned, and the traffic it did or did not produce.

How we respond

Built for a search page people do not leave.

These are the parts of the program that do the work when the click never comes.

Method and sources

Where these numbers come from.

Zero-click figures. SparkToro analysis of Similarweb's US desktop and mobile web clickstream panel, January through April 2026, published June 2026. The 2024 comparison points come from SparkToro and Datos, now a Semrush company. The 2016 and 2019 points come from the now defunct Jumpshot panel.

Share of search figures. SparkToro and Datos, published March 2026, covering Datos' US desktop panel across 41 major search destinations for calendar year 2025.

Caveats worth knowing. Each year in the decade table uses a different panel, different devices, and a different provider, so the long arc is directional rather than a like-for-like series. The share of search study is desktop only and the 41 domains were selected editorially. The 2026 zero-click data covers mobile browser searches but not the Google mobile app, where zero-click features are used more aggressively, so the true figure is likely higher than 68%.

Questions

Zero-click search, answered.

Plain answers to what business owners actually ask about this shift.

Talk to a strategist
What is a zero-click search?
A zero-click search is a search that ends without the person clicking any result. The answer appears on the results page itself, in an AI Overview, a featured snippet, the map pack, a knowledge panel, or a direct answer box, and the journey ends there. The searcher got what they needed. The website that supplied the information got no visit.
What percentage of Google searches end without a click in 2026?
68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click during January through April 2026, according to SparkToro analysis of Similarweb clickstream data. That is up from 60.45% in 2024, a rise of 7.56 percentage points in two years, which SparkToro describes as the fastest acceleration it has measured.
How many clicks still reach the open web?
About 276 of every 1,000 US Google searches now produce a click to a site the search engine does not own. In the 2024 study that figure was 374 per 1,000. That is roughly a 26% reduction in open web clicks per thousand searches in two years. The remaining clicks go to Google properties such as Maps and YouTube, or to paid ads.
Why are my impressions up but my clicks down?
Because ranking and traffic have come apart. You can hold or improve position, gain impressions, and still lose clicks, because a larger share of searches now resolve on the results page. AI Overviews appear on more than 20% of searches and reduce click-through by nearly 60% when present. Rising impressions with flat clicks is the normal signature of this shift, not a sign your site is broken.
Are AI tools like ChatGPT causing this?
Only partly, and less than the headlines suggest. AI tools account for about 3.2% of measured desktop search activity, less than Amazon, Bing, or YouTube. Google AI Mode drew only 0.34% of searches during the study window. The much larger AI effect sits inside Google itself, through AI Overviews on the standard results page. Most AI answers people see are Google answers.
Is SEO still worth it if most searches end without a click?
Yes, and the reasoning has shifted. The systems producing zero-click answers draw from what already ranks, so rankings still decide who gets quoted, mapped, and named. What changed is that the click is now optional. The work is worth doing when it is measured on visibility, citations, map pack placement, calls, and branded search demand rather than sessions alone.
How should we measure SEO now?
Add measures that survive a missing click. Track impressions and average position by query cluster, share of AI Overview and featured snippet citations, map pack placement and calls or direction requests, branded search volume over time, and direct or unattributed conversions. Sessions stay in the report, but they stop being the headline number.
Does this affect local businesses differently?
Local businesses have lived in the zero-click world longest, because the map pack has always resolved the name, rating, hours, and phone number without a website visit. The practical effect is that the profile, the reviews, and the answer text carry more of the sale than the homepage does, and accuracy across those surfaces is worth more than another design refresh.
In one line

Chicago SEO Company tracks the zero-click shift in search, where 68.01% of US Google searches now end without a click and only about 276 of every 1,000 reach the open web, and builds visibility programs that earn AI citations, map pack placement, and calls rather than relying on clicks alone.
